Worst, Better, Best: The Road Between Where You Are and Who You Want to Be
Most of us know two points on our map very clearly.
We know where we are. And on some days, that feels like the worst place we could possibly be. A job that drains us. A career that has stalled. A relationship that isn’t working. A version of ourselves we no longer recognise.
We also know where we want to be. The best version of ourselves, living the life we keep picturing when we can’t sleep.
What we rarely look at is the space in between. That space has a name. It is called better.
Three words, three roles

Worst is a position. It is not your identity. It is a place you may be standing for now, not where you have to stay.
Best is a direction. It is the version of you that your goal is asking for.
Better is the road. Every single day of real change lives here.
Here is where most of us go wrong. We stare at the worst, then at the best, and we measure the distance. The gap looks enormous, so we freeze. But nobody crosses that gap in one jump. You don’t need to reach your best today. You only need to take the next step that is better than where you are.
The question that keeps us stuck

In my coaching work, one question has shown up more than any other:
“Why is everything happening badly to me?”
It is an honest question. Pain asks it. But here is the hard truth: it has no useful answer. Even when you find one (the boss, the economy, the family, bad luck), you are left exactly where you were. Only now you have a reason to stay there.
“Why me?” looks backward and outward. It hands the steering wheel to circumstances.
There is another question:
“What can I do to make this better?”
It looks forward and inward. It does not deny the pain. It simply refuses to let the pain have the final word.
Same situation, different question
Picture two people who lose their jobs in the same week.
The first asks, “Why did this happen to me?” and spends the next three months replaying the unfairness of it.
The second asks the same question for a few days. Then they ask a different one: “What is one thing I can do this week?” They update their CV. They call three people. They start learning the skill they had been postponing.
Six months later, these two people started from the same place but are living very different lives. The difference was not talent or luck. It was the question they chose to live with.
Better is an action, not a feeling
“Better” does not mean you feel better. Quite often, the better step feels worse in the moment. The difficult conversation. The early alarm. The application that might be rejected.
So don’t measure better by your mood. Measure it by your actions: small, specific, and repeatable.
And you don’t need to see the whole road. You don’t need to know exactly how you will get from worst to best. You only need to know the next better step from where you are standing. The road reveals itself to the people who are walking it.
Hard truth, warm intent
You may not be responsible for how you arrived at your worst. Life is not always fair, and some of what happened to you was genuinely not your doing.
But you are responsible for whether you stay there.
That is not blame. That is power. Because the moment something is your responsibility, it also becomes something within your reach.
Try this today

Take ten minutes and write down your answers to three questions:
1. Where am I, honestly, right now?
Name your worst without drama and without minimising it.
2. What does my best look like?
Be specific. “Happy” is not a goal; a role, a habit or a relationship you can describe is.
3. What is one thing I can do in the next 24 hours to make this a little better?
Then do that one thing. Tomorrow, ask the third question again.
You will not jump from worst to best. Nobody does. But every person who has reached their best walked the same road: better, then better, then better again.
So stop asking why it is happening to you. Start asking what you can do with it.
At Mirror Mind, this is the heart of our CAG approach: Clarity about where you stand, Alignment with what your best really looks like, and Growth, one better step at a time. If you are at your worst and can’t see the next step, let’s find it together.
